Tupelo Craft Beer Festival Producer Talks Beer!

Guest blog was written by, Matthew Leff, the founder of Rhizome Productions Inc. and the producer of the Tupelo Craft Beer Festival.

It is incredible to think that we are just a little under one week from the 2nd Annual Tupelo Craft Beer Festival. I am super excited to return to Tupelo and host the event at our new home of Fairpark.  It is also very exciting to see the growth of Mississippi craft beer in just one year’s time.

Here are a few quick important notes about the festival and then I will tell you a bit more about the exciting new breweries that will be at the festival this year:

-We return March 22, 2014 to Fairpark.
-Hours of the festival are 12-5 p.m.
-Tickets are $40 and include a custom Belgian tasting glass, unlimited samples, and drinking water.
-Tickets can be purchased online at www.tupelocraftbeerfest.com, or locally at Papa V’s, The Neon Pig, The  Blue Canoe, Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association office, and Todd’s Big Star.
-Bonfire Orchestra and The Damn It Boys will preform live during the festival.
-Food will be sold by The Neon Pig, Local Mobile Food Truck, and one more vendor.
-Friday evening, we will be teaming up with Kermit’s Outlaw Kitchen to host a very special beer dinner that you do not want to miss.

Okay, now onto the exciting part! If you recall, last year we had three Mississippi breweries in attendance, and this year we are excited to say that number has DOUBLED! They include Yalobusha Brewing Company, Southern Prohibition, and Oxford Brewing Co. We, of course, will welcome back Lazy Magnolia, Lucky Town, and Crooked Letter.

Yalobusha Brewing Company is from Water Valley, MS, and was founded by Andy O’Bryan and is the fourth active brewery in the state. They will feature several different beers for you to sample, and, of course, several folks that work at the brewery will be in attendance for you to meet. For more info on this brewery, visit: https://www.facebook.com/YalobushaBrewing

Next up, we have Southern Prohibition from Hattiesburg, MS. They started brewing beer in April, 2013 and offer up their beers both on draft and in awesome sixteen ounce cans (first brewery in MS to can beer)! Get ready to meet the good folks behind these exciting new beers. For more info on this brewery, visit: http://soprobrewing.com/

Last but not least, we welcome Oxford Brewing Company to the festival. Mason Meeks, who quickly took up home brewing in 2011 when the State of MS legalized it, started Oxford Brewing Company. After many home brew awards, he decided to pursue his dream of a real brewery. Currently, he brews at Back Forty Brewing in Gadsden, AL, where he oversees the entire process. They hope to open their own production brewery in Oxford this year. For more info on this brewery, visit: http://oxfordmsbrewing.com/

Once again, we do encourage people to plan ahead and get your tickets in advance since we do limit the size of this event to 1,500 (we made a call, and we promise it will not snow again). On a personal note, we would like to thank the City of Tupelo for allowing us to host this event, as we really enjoy spending time in Tupelo!

Cheers and Drink Craft Beer!

“You know what Tupelo needs? A BBQ Competition.”

Five years ago, an off-hand comment from a Link Centre board member kicked off a journey that this non-profit arts and social service center could never have imagined. “You know what Tupelo needs? A barbecue competition.” Who knew a comment so simple in nature would foster so much. Shortly after, talks emerged and one thing led to another and in April 2010, the inaugural Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel hosted 31 teams in the Link Centre parking lot. And for a brand new competition, it went about as well as anyone could have hoped.

In the competition’s sophomore year, the Duel moved to Fairpark, picked up 100 professional teams and hosted the crew of "BBQ Pitmasters" who filmed an episode at the festival. For the past two years, more than 10,000 people have gathered to celebrate and enjoy a southern cultural tradition at the Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel and Festival at Fairpark in Tupelo. The visitors enjoy the enticing aromas of slow cooking over wood fires, visit the professional barbecue teams with their whimsical names, listen to southern music, shop with craft vendors and of course, eat barbecue.

Scheduled for March 14-15, the Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel and Festival exists as a fundraiser for Link Centre, which “serves as Northeast Mississippi’s premier regional and cultural service center, creating a community of shared services and experiences that transform lives by inspiring, educating, and improving their health and well being” (http://www.link-centre.org).  Money is raised at the Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel and Festival through the barbeque competition, vendors, plus food and drink sales.  The festival itself is free and open to the public. For the past two years, the festival has enjoyed visitors from throughout the region.

Still not convinced you should come out? Take it from Link Centre Executive Director, Melanie Deas, "I have been a vegetarian for 25 years now, and I LOVE to hawk barbecue now!" Two major awards testify to the success of the Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel. In 2012, the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association selected the competition as the year’s Best Special event, and in 2013, the Mississippi Main Street Association named it the Best Culinary Arts Event.  Building on these past successes, the coordinators hope to take the festival to new levels with the help of the Mississippi Humanities Council.
