August 27 - September 2

September's right around the corner, and there are always things to do and places to go in Tupelo.  Although there aren't any big events this week, you can always check out our website for things going on in town.  For example, don't forget to stop by the Oren Dunn Museum and check out their "Hospital on the Hill" exhibit before it departs on September 22. The Splash Pad at Veteran's Park will close after Labor Day, so venture out to East Tupelo with the kids for one last drop of summer.  The Downtown Association's 13th Annual Chili Fest is now calling for teams to participate in this delicious event on October 12.  If you have what it takes to battle out other residents of Tupelo and surrounding areas, sign up today for your chance at the ultimate prize.  Hurricane Isaac is due to hit Tupelo on Thursday or Friday with high winds and lots of rain; so please remember to be safe, keep an eye on the weather, and be prepared for Isaac if you live in this region.  We here at Tupelo CVB wish you the best this week!

August 20-26

Labor Day is right around the corner, and Tupelo should be your destination.  Start out with a visit to see us here at the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau and grab a seat to watch one of our featured short films, like "Tupelove" or "Front Porch in Tupelo."  Also while you're here, check out our Roots of Elvis exhibit and two of the jumpsuits worn by Elvis himself.  For great budget-friendly ideas about what to do when you're in town (or for Tupelo residents, what to do to get out of the house), check out our itinerary suggestions.  However, if you choose to go to Veteran's Park, keep in mind that the Splash Pad closes after Labor Day, but the new Music Bend Nature Trail is now open and ready for runners or even those who are looking for just a casual stroll.  For nighttime activity, check out our list of live music for a taste of the Tupelo sound.  And before you leave, don't forget to take your picture with the new Elvis statue!

August 13-19

After the excitement of last week's activities, this week calms back down for the local Tupelonians.  However, Elvis festivities have not yet ended.  The Birthplace is expecting more than twenty buses of tourists coming to visit the house in which Elvis was born, as well as the museum, church, and new renovations that include a theater.  Last Thursday, a new statue of Elvis was unveiled at Fairpark.  If you're in town, stop by and take a picture with the King.  And speaking of the King, this week the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau will be headed to Graceland and setting up booths at the Elvis Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday and the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Competition on Friday and Saturday.  If you're there, come see us and pick up a fan, guitar pick, or magnet.  Have a great week!

August 6-12

Farewell, summer!  And hello to the busiest week in Tupelo!  Not only do area schools go back in session, but it's also Elvis Week!  This year Elvis Week is even more important, as 2012 marks the 35th anniversary of the death of Elvis.  With so many events going on this week, there's something for everybody to do.  On Wednesday, filmmaker and musician Wsir Johnson will have a CD release event at Cafe 212 from 6:30-7:30 P.M., and he will also perform his forty minute "Travl'n the Blues" music concert.  On Thursday, Johnson will screen his thirty minute documentary "Shake Rag" at the Lyric Theatre at 9 A.M.  At 6:30 P.M., the Down on Main series continues with Eden Brent, Marty Stuart, and the Tupelo Unity Choir.  At 8 P.M., the new statue of Elvis will be unveiled, and don't miss your photo opportunity playing around the base of the statue before Thursday.  On Friday at 9 A.M., the Tupelo Unity Choir will perform at the Lyric Theatre and will be followed by a panel discussion consisting of friends and acquaintances who knew and loved Elvis.  The schedule of all of these events (and more) can be found here, and they're all free and open to the public.  So come out to the event that's right for you!  Have a good week; we know we will!
